Maybe if I was watching this airing on TV before I might get anxious thinking that Luffy will lose but seeing a thousand more episodes to go makes me feel "nah" he will live long.

This Don Krieg in essence is just a sly coward who relies on petty tricks, good weapons and uses the sympathy/kindness of others to get what he wants. Take away his large but still disposable army, his fancy weapons and what you have is just a coward through and through. A typical bully. He doesn't have and will never have what Luffy has, actual courage and an undeterminable will to protect others at the cost of their own lives. And that is why he'll lose.
